EVENT DETAILS
The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas will hold its annual state conference on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center at the University of Texas at Austin, 1900 University Ave. Journalists, public officials and media law attorneys will address timely topics in state open government laws and accountability news reporting. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Lisa Falkenberg of the Houston Chronicle is the luncheon keynote speaker. Also at the conference luncheon, we present our James Madison Award to a defender of free speech and open government, and the State Bar of Texas presents its Gavel Awards to outstanding journalists. Conference sessions run from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will feature discussions on the future of the Texas Public Information Act; recent court rulings affecting access to public records; and the use of freedom of information laws by news reporters who cover public officials. Among the participants are Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi; First Amendment attorneys Laura Prather, Paul Watler, Joe Larsen and Jim Hemphill; and journalists from the Texas Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News.
