The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas presents Open Government Seminars throughout the state during even-numbered years to educate the public on the Texas Public Information Act and Texas Open Meetings Act. The Apri 17 seminar takes place at the University of Texas at Arlington in the University Center, 300 W. First St. in Arlington. It is co-sponsored by UTA Student Publications.

The Texas Attorney General's Office presents the free sessions on the Public Information Act and associated cost rules. Attendees are also welcome to bring their own lunch. A food court is located nearby in the University Center.

Both the TPIA and TOMA sessions qualify for state-certified open government training for public officials accredited through the Attorney General's Office. Attorneys attending these two sessions can qualify for State Bar of Texas CLE credit.

The final event of the day is the new First Amendment Institute, a free two-hour training session designed for journalists covering the basics of press freedom, libel and other time First Amendment issues in journalism. Some travel scholarship funds may be available for journalists attending from out of town. Contact FOI Foundation executive director Kelley Shannon at for more information.
